Blast Simulation in Underground Mines Using the Combined Finite-Discrete Element Method

چکیده
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the application of a combined finite-discrete element program, such as ELFEN, for the simulation and prediction of backfill stope failure risks due to blast loading effects in underground mines. A real size of a backfilled stope blasted in the nearby rock of the paste fill is modelled. The dynamic fracture propagation and fragmentation in rock and the behaviour of paste fill by using the proposed model are provided and discussed. The results show the proposed model can be applied to provide an effective means to simulate substantial insight into the dynamic fracture processes during the blasting and estimate failure risks of the paste fill by using the peak particle velocity as a measure of blast damage. Dynamic response of underground structures has always been a topic of concern for designers and researchers. The behavior of these complicated systems under blast loading is affected by various factors and parametric studies are required to investigate their significance. متن کاملExperimental Study of Masonry Structure Under Impact Loading and Comparing it with Numerical Modeling Results via Finite Element Model Updating
Given the sophisticated nature of the blast phenomenon in relation to structures, it is of significance to accurately investigate the structure behavior under blast loads. Due to its rapid and transient nature, blast loading is one of the most important dynamic loadings on the structures. Since masonry materials are widely used as the partition and bearing walls in the existing and newly-built ...

Blasting operations generate seismic effects in underground mines. These effects apply additional dynamic loads on the support system, which should bear both static and dynamic loads. Static loads are caused by the weight of the superincumbent strata, while dynamic loads occur as a result of blasting in the mining area. Identification of the origin and determination of the support system behavi...
متن کاملDiscrete Element Modeling of Dynamic Compaction with Different Tamping Condition
Dynamic Compaction (DC) is a common deep compaction method that is usually used for densification of coarse-grained soils. Although traditional continuum-based models such as the Finite Element Method can be successfully applied for assessment of stress distributions or deformations induced by DC, they are typically not adequate for capturing the grain scale mechanisms of soil behavior under im...

Various structural discontinuities, which form a discrete fracture network, play a significant role in the failure conditions and stability of the rock masses around underground excavations. Several continuum numerical methods have been used to study the stability of underground excavations in jointed rock masses but only few of them can take into account the influence of the pre-existing natur...
